Performance Max vs Standard Shopping for E-commerce Brands in 2026

Short answer: Performance Max reaches more shoppers across all of Google, including Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Discover, and uses Google's automation to decide where to spend. Standard Shopping shows only Shopping ads and gives you far more control over products, bids and search terms. Most e-commerce brands do best running Performance Max as the main campaign and Standard Shopping alongside it for products or searches that need tighter control.

Performance Max has become the default for Google retail advertising, but Standard Shopping still earns its place. Here is how we decide between them for Shopify brands.

What is the difference between Performance Max and Standard Shopping?

  • Where ads show: Performance Max: Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Standard Shopping: Shopping results only.

  • Who controls bids and placements: Performance Max: Mostly Google's automation. Standard Shopping: You, with manual or automated bidding.

  • Search term control: Performance Max: Search terms report and negative keywords. Standard Shopping: Full search terms report and negative keywords.

  • Creative needed: Performance Max: Product feed plus images, videos and headlines. Standard Shopping: Product feed only.

  • Best for: Performance Max: Reaching more shoppers and scaling. Standard Shopping: Control, testing and protecting margin.

What Performance Max does well

  • Reach. One campaign can find shoppers on YouTube and Discover who never typed a search.

  • Automation. Google adjusts bids and placements in real time using signals advertisers cannot see.

  • New customer goals. You can tell Performance Max to value new customers more than returning ones, which helps when growth matters more than repeat sales.

  • More control than it used to have. In 2026, Performance Max supports negative keywords, a search terms report, brand exclusions, channel-level reporting and asset reporting. Budget across channels is still decided by Google.

Where Standard Shopping still wins

  • Tight control of search terms. You see every query and can block irrelevant ones immediately.

  • Clean testing. Want to know whether a new feed title format works? Standard Shopping isolates the result without YouTube or Display muddying it.

  • Protecting high-ticket products. Performance Max tends to spend on cheaper best sellers that convert quickly. A dedicated Standard Shopping campaign keeps budget on expensive pieces, such as fine jewelry, that convert less often but earn more per sale.

  • Smaller catalogs and budgets. With few conversions, automation has little to learn from. Standard Shopping can be steadier while data builds.

How they compete for the same products

If the same product is in both a Performance Max and a Standard Shopping campaign, Google decides which campaign serves the ad for each search using Ad Rank, meaning bid and quality, rather than always giving Performance Max priority. That means overlap is fine, but you should plan it deliberately:

  1. Decide which campaign owns which products. For example, Performance Max for the full catalog and Standard Shopping for high-ticket or high-margin items.

  2. Or split by search intent. Use Standard Shopping for generic category searches you want to watch closely, and let Performance Max cover the rest.

  3. Keep brand separate. Exclude your brand terms from Performance Max and run a dedicated brand Search campaign so branded sales do not inflate shopping results.

A structure that works for most Shopify brands

  1. Fix the feed first. Titles written the way shoppers search, complete attributes, accurate prices and variants. Everything else depends on this.

  2. Label products in the feed by margin, price tier and best sellers using custom labels.

  3. Run one or two Performance Max campaigns grouped by margin or price tier, with brand exclusions and a new customer goal if growth is the priority.

  4. Add Standard Shopping for high-ticket products or categories where you need search term control.

  5. Run brand Search separately with its own budget.

  6. Measure against Shopify. Compare Google-reported revenue with Shopify revenue every week and track blended return and new customer revenue. Our guide to ROAS versus Shopify revenue shows how.

Frequently asked questions

Is Standard Shopping going away?

Standard Shopping is still available in 2026. Google pushes advertisers toward Performance Max, but Standard Shopping remains useful for control and testing.

Can I run Performance Max and Standard Shopping at the same time?

Yes. Many brands run both. Google chooses between them for each search based on Ad Rank, so decide in advance which products or searches each campaign is meant to cover.

Why is Performance Max spending on my brand name?

Performance Max will bid on searches for your brand unless you exclude them, because those searches convert easily. Add brand exclusions and run brand Search as its own campaign so you can see which sales are truly new.

Do I need videos for Performance Max?

Performance Max works without videos, but supplying your own short product videos usually performs better than letting Google generate them from images, and it keeps your brand looking the way you want on YouTube.

How long does Performance Max take to learn?

Expect a few weeks for results to stabilize, and longer for expensive products with fewer conversions. Avoid large budget or structure changes during that period.

The bottom line

Performance Max is the engine for reach and scale. Standard Shopping is the steering wheel for control. Use both on purpose, fix your feed before anything else, keep brand search separate and judge everything against your Shopify revenue.
